Hi,
I'm not doing restaurant magic (not good enough ) But I have many connections, so I could get some time to perform I think. Anyway I wondered, what is the right time to approach them? Before dinner while they are waiting? After dinner? You go table by table or you perform in an open space where everybody can see it? What tricks are you avoiding (card from mouth, etc)?.
I understand it is "up to you", but I was wondering what the experienced people have learned so far, so I don't have to make that mistake if I ever get into that situation (if I do rest. magic in the future, otherwise I just gained some extra knowledge )

Performing tricks on a Restaurant is Very good!
I suggest that you perform tricks before Dinner or in the Middle!
The following tricks are very effective:
Exp: 2 Card Monte, Frout loops, Transpo, HitMan is Very Good Trick! and Tricks that uses D.L.
They get strong and very explosive Reactions! The Spectators will Love It!

When you go to a restaurant you go to eat. If you even get a chance to see magic, even better. But if the magician changes the dinner into a magicshow, you are not achieving the objective of the restaurant because they will remember you and not the place.
What this means is:
- Be brief. Less is better at restaurants.Go straight to the magic.
- Have a line to introduce your self and get started, always naming the restaurant.
- Perform sort, straight, easy to understand, stand up tricks and most important, with a quick RESET if they are not improptu and whatch the angles for the hard ones.
- Always table by table
- Never sit at the table
- Dress according to the level of the restaurant
- Entertain your table only, one at a time. Make the others want you, you will be there
- There is no best moment to jump in, I would say better to go two or three times to every table for quick stops
- Always leave presentation cards with your name and number at each table if the restaurant policy allows it.
There are many more things to consider. I will stop here for now.

F.O.L,
First off, please read David's post, it has most of the basic information you will need. However, you must know that just because you are aware does not mean you won't make the mistake, or make one which you were not aware of in the first place.
Remember that when approaching a table you are invading THEIR space. So, you must be curteous, brief, and make sure that you have their consent to perform. You would not want to offend someone and have them not come back to the resteraunt. So be careful.
The common rule is the rule of three. That is three quick, wonderful effects, that will entertain them, not take up too much time, and leave them wanting to come back to the resteraunt again to see more. I'd suggest allowing the waiter to take the order, then after the order has been taken approach the table. You will have plenty of time since the food will be being prepared, the waiter will not be interupting your magic.
To be honest all of the knowledge you seek could not be found here and many would not agree with each other on certain topics. Its a tricky business, but a rewarding one for your magic. I wish you the best and have fun doing it.

I recomend going before or during the meal. Cups and balls is always a good choice when it comes to restaurant magic. Coin in bottle is very good too, with the folding coin, can I say that? If not then edit it please! It always gets good reations. An other good tip is to find someone who ordered an expensive meal, more tips hehe .
Yeah, it is Ok, no edit for now, I mean, coins don't fold, right?

lol playazlife I'll pay attention to what they order
Thanks for the replies everybody, these are some good starting points. Both restaurants where I can probably perform, if I asked, are more of a relax kind of restaurant. Not a very chique, 1000$-dinner restuarants. that probably makes it a bit easier, a bit more relax.
Should I ask if they want to see magic or not?

FOL,
Yes, you should always ask. Remember, you are invading their space, you have no right to do that unless they give permission. So, always be polite and ask before performing your magic.

I don't think that you should ask if they want to see magic. You should say something more along the lines of:
Good evening and thanks for comming to Fredos, tonight is our magical night and we would like to entertain you with some magic, may I?

David,
To me, that is still asking, and being polite, as I stated. You should not just go "Hey, you want to see a trick?" That is not proper. So I believe you and I are thinking the same thing, just a misunderstanding.

Ok Bryan, I wanted to clear the fact that if they refuse, they wouldn't know what they would be missing and at the end of the day, you want them to say yes, (to achieve the goal of the restaurant). So I think that if you ASK on a way that makes them feel somehow more obligated they will accept.
If they don't want, they will let you know. You know that as well as I do.

Thanks for the replies guys. I see it as asking as well, but more like a retorical question, where you expect the yes, but they still have the opportunity to say no
Carrion/David, That's a nice line, thanks, I'm checking out the restaurant/walk around forum of penguin magic as well.

Hmm, here are some tips I posted at penguin once, just 10 steps I made up, there were many disagreements and stuff about it, but the steps are for somone who would prefer routining over just having an arsenal of effects and 'going with the flow'. As more advanced magicians would do. Here are hte tips I put up a long time ago, hope they help you some how :
1. Sit down, write down a list of every effect you can do, and I mean every effect you can do...
2. Cross out anything that needs more than 10 seconds prep time...
3. Cross out anything that goes longer than 4 Minutes....
4. Cross out anything that needs a reasonable amount of table space...
5. Arrange the tricks into routines (3-4 tricks in a routine), YOU WILL NEED AT LEAST AND I MEAN AT LEAST 6 Routines....
6. Make sure your starting trick is short and visual to get them interested..
7. Make sure your middle effect/2effects will keep their attention, they dont have to be terribly visual but make them magical....
8. Make your last effect your strongest effect to leave them wanting more... Walkaway and they might come back for you another day just to see more magic, manager will like this.
9. Once you have done all this and have your routines, practice every single one day in and day out for about 6 months...
10. Once everything is foolproof and you have 6 SOLID routines, I think your ready for an audition
Here are just 10 Steps I have put together that I believe will help you to becoming a resturant magician... Good Luck!
There we go, but after reading these some more advanced magicians have corrected me, you may like to hop over to penguins forum and have a look, heres a link to the post http://www.penguinmagic.com/discuss/viewtopic.php?t=58289&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 and you will have to do alot of reading, a very experienced resturant magician B_Magic helped a load in advice, after reading that you should have the main idea across.
Hope you Enjoy!

| Hey, that's good tips you got there! Would you recomend something like a color change or a vanish as a first routine? Oh and how much do you get tipped on each table?(estimated)

Like I said, starting tricks just have to be visual.... So you don't bore them. Another good idea is to start by borrowing something to do a trick with, I noticed this when performing pinnacle because they are A) Worried about their ring and B) Amazed that you are creating magic with their item. Another good starter is B2-Bober.... Sponge Balls arnt bad... And alot of restuarnt workers are very scared of using IT, but I find them to be a big sucess.... Loops are probably the way to go if you are going to use IT...
Cheers,
Dylan
