I'm interested in performing my mentalism in a restaurant, only I'm unsure of how serious it will be taken in such a fast paced enviroment. I have several very strong effects which are well routined together that I think would be suitable for restaurant work. I've worked very hard on them and am very proud of them. The sucsess of the performance of these effects requires the spectatator take it seriously. Not that I'm asking them to really believe that I have psychic powers or whatnot, but they need to follow my instructions with all the seriousness as if I was REALLY doing what I appear to be, otherwise, I feel the mystery will be lost. I fear that in such a fast-paced enviroment, the spectators generally won't take it as seriously as I'd like. I kind of imagine myself standing there like Al Gore in the ManBearPig episode of South Park, screaming "I'm really thuper therial guys!" So what do you think? Any advice?

The proof of the pudding is in the tasting.

Give it a go and find out for yourself. What is there to lose? An evening and a little bit of face :)

Maybe picking the right type of restaurant would be a good start: fast food would seem a bad idea if you want people to focus for an extended period of time. Fancy restaurants on the other hand may not appreciate magic acts inside...

Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply. I was more speaking of performing semi-pro at a restaurant. I don't have a particular one in mind, but fast food is, at least to me obviously out of the question. Sorry if I was unclear on that. But anyway, I know the nature of a restuarant is that of a fast-paced nature. Not fast food fast, but the staff are still trying to get people in and out as fast as they can, to keep things running smoothly. It would be highly rude of me to insist on performing while they're eating, but a restaurant hires a magician to provide some light entertainment for their customers while they wait for their food. My routines aren't that long, each set I have consists of 3 effects, which provide a beginning, middle, and an end. All in all, each set runs less than 10 minutes. If I give an example of one of my effects, maybe I can better explain my fear. Without going into too much boring detail, (because when I first typed it, I felt it necessary to include every little detail) I'm going to cut right to the chase. Essentually, I appear to locate the spectator's selected card from 4 other random cards by feeling the spectator's pulse. I instruct the spectator to "ignore your card for a moment, and focus only on the 4 cards that are not yours. When I pass my hand over one that's not yours, I need you to will me to remove it without saying anything. In other words, scream in your mind only 'REMOVE IT!' When I pass over your card, just remain silent." Then I do it again, and have them do the exact opposet, before revealing the location. What my fear is, in this example at least, is that they don't do what I ask of them, (since I can't really tell if they're following my instructions or not). If they don't follow my instructions, they'll speculate that the pulse reading was just show, completely destroying the idea of "not sleight of hand, but sleight of mind" image I'm trying to create.

I recall seeing a magician do walkaround in a pub several years ago. I am sure he avoided the rowdy tables, etc. I suspect that you would have to avoid tables where a bunch of guys might try to impress the girls, etc. you would do well.

If my wife and are are dining out and a walkaround was performing we would certainly invite them over. Incidentally I have met several magicians and ALWAYS show my IBM card before-hand--and quickly point out that I still enjoy watching others perform.

Go for it!
