In the 90s there was a very popular magician named Rudy Coby. He was everywhere on tv. His most popular act was one in which he walked with 4 legs. He was like a cartoon character in a human body.
Just wonder if he's still around. I haven't heard anything about him since people like David Blaine invaded the scene with some hokus pokus box type of magic.

Well I honestly dont know if thats him, but I recently saw a show on TV which featured interesting approaches to magic, and this guy sounds a lot like what you describe, his eyes would pop 5 inches out of their sockets, sometimes his head would explode... It was really hilarious..
ps. oh yeah, I forgot the point of this, if it is him... What they said on the show (which could be outdated) was that he was in Italy performing regularly, if it even is him.

No...

Rudy Colby billed himself as "The Coolest Magician On Earth" I believe

He had a HEAVY hairdo(gel it looks almost plastic like the old toy figure's hair), Black Glasses, white labcoat and Green/blue scrub type pants.

He is pretty good and known for doing the Blockhead illusion/stunt.

Don't know what happened to him, but yes he was pretty popular I still have recordings, many things like cut in half illusions, the robot table thing with human legs, he walked with 4 legs and some other body part stretching stuff...

Billed mostly to kids though from what I remember, his biggest special was like half songs/story.

I think he was friends with Dick Clark(or someone of that type, could be bob barker for all I know) that helped produce the special....

I think I remember seeing him a very very long time ago (though I cannot be sure).

He did a very entertaining gig where he had 5 or 6 legs, and one by one they fell out. Its all back in my subconscience mind.

Can anyone confirm weather he had ever done a similar trick before?

Thank you,

AJ

Yes, he's the guy with the multiple legs act, and is the guy that MacGyver describes with the big hairgel tuft and black sunglasses.

10 years ago he had this great television special on FOX where Rudy Coby did gigantic illusions.

There was one musical number, where the nurse, which is being cut in half sings about it.

"This is for me, this is for you, because I've been cut, cut in two." (Or something like this)

Yes, the nurse act was horrific. She was pushing a cart and only her legs were real. The rest of her body was a robot.
This was in the good pre-editing age in which was you saw on tv was what really happened on the stage.

Rudy Colby...

Some background info for you... One of the most original magicians to come along in a long time. He developed a character that was designed to break the mold of what magicians were doing at the time.

He was very original, funny and his character was so good it was made into a comic book. He cross marketed this phenomena across wide swaths of media including TV, radio, stage, comics and much more.

He grew up in the same neighborhood as Jeff McBride and to this day Jeff speaks highly about their friendship.

Rudy was also very into music and entered the music industry where he is very successfull from what I understand. This led to dropping of his character from performances.

He was the one of the few magicians that could fit right into the MTV growth spurt that was happening at the time.

The magic community lost one of the most creative talents when he left the magic scene for music.

Perhaps one day he will return.

So he quit magic to start a music career? That explains it.... indeed a big loss for the magic community.

Mmm, I know this is late...like really late. And I know I'm gonna be accused of resurrecting old converstaions, called a "noob" and all things like that. But I joined this forum for the one point of giving this very useful information. Rudy Coby is around, he's alive, he's preforming shows at the Galaxy Theater in Valleyfair Minneapolis. I'm not talking one show a day either, we're talking FOUR shows a day every day (except Tuesdays, I assume he takes that day off). Of course, there's also http://www.rudycoby.net his offical website. So, fans of Rudy Coby, go forth! Go to his website! Buy his shirts that he has on sale!

Edit: Oh yeah, he's on Twitter as well, http://twitter.com/rudycoby so go enjoy there too, apparently he got a bunch of new props a few days ago and was very excited.

Yup. He's in my backyard (so to speak).

John Bryce is a local magician with strong ties to Rudy (has been a backstage/onstage assistance), so I get all my "Coby news" through him.

Not only is Mr. Coby performing at Valley Fair; he is also trying to do different shows! (Not sure if that is every show is different, every day is different or every week is different...)

Since he is here, it has been rumored he may come and speak to the magic club. That would be cool.
