I don't post here much but I plan to start doing so more. Anywho do any working magicians get nervous still? I was at a convention and David Roth, probably the best living coin magician, was shaky. Does anyone still get the shakes?

Thanks,

Ian

P.S. The new website looks incredible.

I would think the shakes come from lack of confidence in your ability to perform the trick at hand.  When I do routines that I've  performed a gazillion times my hands just go through the motions almost by themselves and I just watch them and the looks on  the spectators faces.  If I do something that isn't down solid I sometimes get a little apprehensive but that usually goes away with repeated performances.

The times I've seen Roth he was rock solid so I can't speculate on what the cause for shakeness might have been.......Glen

I think there is a big difference performing for laypeople or magicians, at least in the mind of the magician.  I remember reading that no one less than Ascanio has been seen nervous performing for magicians.  Eugene Burger had a good suggestion in one of his book, ie. to treat magicians like laypeople when you perform.  You pretend they are laypeople and treat them like laypeople.  That really helps.  And if you get nervous for laypeople, 3 suggestions I have are:
- perform as much as you can
- practice
- learn the theory behind your magic.  Understanding why a trick works gives a lot of confidence.

1, I saw Roth and he was not shaking
2. Therefore Roth never shakes

Every other professional DOES get the shakes every once in a blue moon though, even the Big big names, I'm sure. I can conceive of several occasions in which I might get the shakes, which again shows us that Roth could not possibly ever have shaken. Murphy's law forces us to consider the possibility that it might happen to us and to find ways of dealing with the shaking if it ever arises. Personally, I plan to point to an object behind them and then whack them on the back of the knee.
