We  need to comment more on peoples vids, I know this has been said many times before but it has to be said again. I don't care if you comment on mind.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #b4b4b4"But lately allot of vids have gone up and no-one and I mean no-one has made a comment, suggestion, or anything. These guys have taken the time to shoot a vid for us to view we can at least say something.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #b4b4b4"We are the only ones that can make this site a great place to vist and learn, but we need everybody's help to do it.

SO COME ON PEOPLE< LETS DO IT !!!!!!!

Well am gonna say a couple of things, I use to be some what "addictied" to this site not an extreme way but I checked the site daily when it was "good".

In my opinion as soon as the site got so commercal with all this advertisment everywhere the site changes. Think about it, that was when it started going downhill. All these new members dont have a clue about magic, video after video of pointless magic. No wonder existing members dissapear another snap change video, invisible palm just crap to be honest, all this compitition stuff who really cares?. I have no problem with these trick or when not very proffesional videos get uploaded but you guys know what I mean. When I use to post videos it seemed like such a big deal and am sure am not the only one that feels this way. I honestly cant remember the last time I watched a video when I have looked around here.

Just one more thing imagine a new member comming to this site seeing fehers post then below it see some other forum post about pizza,  man I find it hard for anyone not  to agree with me. Along with all the stupid posts along the line comic books is another classic a can remember. Or how about the posts where it consists of 3 people 10 pages just boring junk about some sleight that could easyily have been an e-mail or pm as its always the same people in the same "topics" so really what is the point.

Now thats me done I stand by what I have said as a former daily forum poster, video commentor and video uploader I have been around here long enouth to say these things. I will be suprised if anyone totally disagrees with me so look forward to any reply.

I havnt spell checked this so please dont think you have "one on me" I apologize for any mistakes.

I seem to remember various forum topics from a while back, the gist of which was that "MVD would be a better place if only we had".... a more up to date site with upgraded member profile and privacy features, a new look, bigger file size limit etc etc, the list goes on. Every single one of these requests has been granted and more, we have an all singing, all dancing site as requested. Advertising is a necessary part of this, to pay for the running costs of the site and keep it free for us all to use, personally I don't think it's particularly obtrusive and it generates revenue for MVD each time someone chooses to click on a link.

Ricky, you say that there are new members who don't have a clue about magic, another snap change video, an Invisible Palm, but then you go on to say that you honestly can't remember the last time you have actually watched a video when you have looked around here?? Personally it's a long time since I've seen a snap change or Invisible Palm video, the variety of clips has been huge, we have some skilled new members. You don't like light hearted off topic forum threads, or in-depth discussions about a sleight? Fair enough, each to his own but there are plenty of other topics, or you could start one of your own if you don't want to join in a current one. Why knock the people who are still willing to participate when you admit that you yourself are a "former daily forum poster, video commentor and video uploader"? Isn't it the lack of participation that is the issue?

For what it's worth, the drop in participation is something that was noted a long time ago, when we still had the old site with some of the features which we have now lost, and we still had certain members who later decided to move on, they used to complain about it too so it's not a new issue.
I don't know what the solution is, evaluation is a good thing but I don't see the point in blaming the people who are still here and posting in the forums and submitting videos, nor is there any point in harking back to the "good old days" wanting to change things that we can't.

I know I have mentioned this before, but the search function is just not as good as having a full list of all your posts.

Case in point: I remember making a list of things I would like to see implemented here. Since I can't remember the thread name, date, or any "key" words from the text I'm kind of stuck. I even tried looking at every thread that came up when I searched my own name, and I am quite sure I am not seeing everything.

I don't feel like retyping everything from that old post, but I do think there are things in it that have never been addressed. Ever.

If anyone can find it, I would be very happy.

Yup, and double yup. Those are the ones.

I have to ask; how did you find them so quickly?

Regardless, I noticed the newest of the two is almost a year old. We did make it so people must become a member if they want to see an entire video. That was definitely a good move.

Even so, I still think the key to growth is to create the prestige to which rank should (and used to be) associated.

You reap what you sew. And sew far, so what. I know we have had some cosmetic changes ranging from handy to "techie," but nothing is really touching the core issues.

I'd love to help, but this needs to be done from the top down. More of my posts in the forums will have little to no effect. Be it known that when the true call to arms rings out, I will rally to it and give freely of my time/energy. I would assume others wish to do the same. Until that horn is sounded, I will continue to direct my energies to projects that have shown to have a better rate of return.

As I have said before, this could be a fantastic collective of minds, but currently it feels like a second-rate youtube, a vast repository of videos without any defined purpose or mission. I do not consider myself a "negative" person, but sometimes you have to say the emperor is naked. Now, a year later, I will say his invisible shirt has some snazzy new buttons.

Sincerely,

T

I agree with Tim.  I only have a couple vids up, but I really put them up for constructive criticism.  Now, I have seen some great stuff here, and some not so.  Point is, you are hopefully going to get something here you don't get from youtube - an informed audience....

My complaint is the amount of vids submitted to music with no presentation.  Unless you are doing a silent manip act, you need to reach out to the audience (us viewers).  Presentation is everything.

Having said that, I see a lot of unregistered people watching the vids....I wish they would contribute to MVD.  I think this place is a resource that should be used by more people.

Tim,
I must raise my eyebrows when reading this.  I recently posted some comments under a coins across video of yours.  Quite extensively actually.  Your answer to me was something like 'well it works for me, laypeople don't care'.  I must say this was a real put off for me and I have decided after that not to post any comments on your videos anymore.  I mean, I was putting time and energy in sharing you the best of my knowledge (I'm a great fan of coins across), and you seemed to wipe it off the table as trivia.  It seems to me a little bit ridiculous under such conditions to wonder why we do not post any longer....

I think there's some wisdom in this reply. I've certainly been guilty of doing this on occasion. On the one hand, it is possible and even likely that I would receive a comment that I should choose to ignore. On the other hand, every comment is precious as it represents an interpretation of your art. We should be grateful both for comments that we agree with and those we do not agree with.

Then with this being said, when we write a comment on someone else's video, we must accept that the author might not agree with us. And he is perfectly entitled to do so. Especially when it comes to magicians of your respective calibers, you're both big boys with very clear and distinctive notions of what your magic should be, you're bound to disagree irreconcilably on some points. If anything, I think the both of you would benefit greatly from investigating as to why the other thinks the way he thinks.

So that's that, happy winter Solstice to all of you.

Oh and Erland, clearly if you stopped sewing what you rip, you would no longer rip what you sew...

Aramis, that is true... 'don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing'.  It's getting quite religious in here!
But if someone makes clear to me they don't seek to improve, I don't want to push!  Hence the idea of, and I think there also has been a thread on this long time back...
add a little note to your video about why you are posting it on MVD.  What sort of feedback are you looking for?  Do you seek advice on a technical level, are you facing a particular problem with a routine, do you want to show how you perform to other magicians, or share an idea, or perhaps you want to know the name to a move or know if something is original.  It can be many things.  May I also suggest the re-addition of the credits.  Some but not all, add this in the description.  It is nice to know the creators...
