Depends on what you are wanting to do. Are you wanting to entertain your friends and family? Resturaunt, charity events, school shows, parties, live stage shows? Since you are on here it is a good start. Practice and examine different styles of effects to see what suits you best. Work to put together a routine for your event. Get advice from other magicians for styles in magic and time to run for your act, amount to charge if applicable, etc...Talk to owners of a resturaunt if thats the type of setting you want to perform in. There are countless ways to get a start in the field. But I hope some of these will give you an idea and a start. Am sure someone can get you in the right direction for further reading material.
Best of luck in your ventures...

If you are serious enough, youc an always look at your local bookshop/library. That is the best place to start. Get some books from there, which are not focused on one topic, rather on a variety of different things. Some good books which come in my mind are Magic for Beginners - Harry Baron, 100 Magic Tricks - Ian Adair, 100 Classic Magic Tricks - Guy Fedrick, Mark Wilsons Course in Magic. Then there are a number of books to look out in the library/bookstor on cards too, like Card Tricks for Beginners - Baron, Karl Fulves Self Working series, Amazing Card Tricks and Worlds Greatest Card tricks by Longue. I recently got Making Magic by Dawes and Setterington, which is a good book if you want to know more about history of magic, and more about some great magicians.

After getting your feet wet in magic, then you can get deeper and get other books like Roryal Road to Card Magic, Expert Card TEchnique, etc... I would recommend that you spend a year or so on the former group of books, and then go get the latter.

Any other help needed, be sure to ask

If you want to become a magician, you should have an effort to find out what your talent is and let it affect to your art magic and learn it and if you are learning just focus on at and master it dont try to learn so many tricks with out practicing because that would be a big lost to you. Just practice, practice and practice and youll come up with your own move, and present to them you art, masterpiece, orchestra or anything you may describe what magic is for you

the best advice i can give is go to your local ibm ring. . . .not sure how to look it up, but if you live in a big enough city/town chances are there is one. . .the union dues are soooo worth it in that you'll learn almost too much stuff. . .and the members are usually pretty good about loaning you material and teadching you once you establish yourself as reliable and a good guy

just please dont go to ellusionist or penguinmagic if you can help it. . .you shouldnt support that kind of hackery of our art

First of all, neither ellusionist, nor penguinmagic is hackery of any kind. Those two websites have probably started off half the magicians on this website, myself included. And second of all you said "our art"... just remember, it is as much their art as it is ours.

I do not mean to be rude in any way, but sometimes we stick to the negatives too tightly, and forget about the positives

too true, mate! = )

but if penguin is so great, why has sankey started a boycott fo it for "shady and unethical business practices"?

and the rip on ellusionist is that their prices are highway robbery for anyone not living 2 miles away from the awrehouse. . .shipping and handling charges alone made a 6 dollar deck of cards 20 bucks. . . .its robbery i tell ya

Ellusionist has as much right as any other magic retailer to sell stuff and if you don't want to pay their "insane" shipping prices buy stuff from your own town and if you don't have a magic shop in your own country don't moan about the fact that you have to pay certain shipping charges. And I agree with shinjan it is as much right for them to be magicians as it is for us.And I don't see a problem with penguin I do occaisionally buy from penguin but the one in europe due to the warehouse being roughly 10 minutes drive from my house if somebody could tell me the problem with penguin I would love to here a decent reason and sankey has nothing to do with it they sell his stuff and if he doesn't like it he can sell it off another site.I don't mean to be rude I'm just proving a well neglected point.Thank You.

yes, but most kids first comming into magic dont know prices and such. . . and ellusionist has a ban on talking about other sites (or at least they used to. . . .i havent been on in ages)

so they charge these ridiculous prices and fleece you with s&h and all the while they dont tell you there are cheaper places to get the same stuff

You guys have to understand that it has to cost more money for shipping when the delivery is overseas. It's not just 5 minutes away, a bus ride and a plane ride are very different. They cant just drive a truck across the Bering Strait.

Dear Friends you are all right in your own ways.

I donot approve of E/P as I feel thats not the proper start in magic. At the same time I do not find fault with them as magicians or businessmen. The first rule in Mercantile Law is 'Buyer Beware' . The seller would price anything for his wares, is he forcing you to buy from him???? Why do you want to buy from him & call him a theif??? I think this act of acting on ones own free choice & later accusing someone as a theif is Unethical.

I strongly feel IMS  gives you the right start in magic for a great fees of USD 350. Best Wishes to everyone.

personally, i shop at the "local" (only a couple hours away) magic shop. . . but before that, i had to shop online out of ignorance

i always go the impression that e/p (esecially elusionist, not somuch penguin) were almost preying on the ignorant newbies. . .anyone else get that sense?

but, that seems to be a trend these days in business (corporate profits are the highest they've ever been in 40 years in north america. . . .yet wages are decreasing and the economy is in the trash. . . go figure. . )
