I just got interested in this as a hobby latey more and more... Been trying to learn what I can for the time being anything that doesn't involve gimmicks or extra equipment I need to setup, I learned the revolution coin vanish and a few card tricks.  I finally managed to do a single hand deck cut the other day and am working on a single handed shuffle.  Are there any good books out there that teach card tricks / coin tricks that don't involve gimmicks?  I don't mind using a gimmick later on since I'm a bit limited on funds but I have found this to be a very involving hobby to work on in my spare time.

Oh yes, someone here that I've talked to before mentioned michael ammars stuff but before I get that, (which I am considering getting) I just want to know if his tricks require any special decks.

Get The Royal Road to Card Magic and Modern Coin Magic. Both books are cheap and have a lot of info.

Michael Ammar's videos don't require any use of gimmicked decks. Just a regualr pack of playing cards.

No, Michael ammar's "easy to master card miracles" DVDs are all effect you can do using a regular deck. When you need something "special" to perform the trick, it is included when you buy the DVD. So if you've got a deck of cards, you're all set. I'm not sure this applies to his coin series however, but I strongly recommend his card DVDs from owning several volumes myself. I found his Card in egg, in DVD 7 to be an absolute charm and his patter was absolutely hilarious.

Well for the few card tricks, Born to perform card magic - Oz Pearlman i think was the best DVD ive ever watched to learn tricks, i still use almost all the tricks on the DVD now after months of practicing other magic. It has some great easy very hard hitting tricks, and also out of all the tricks there is only one that needs a duplicate card which isnt that much of a gaff or gimmick. If you are a bit short on cash, Royal Road to card magic is the next best thing to start on.

royal road is good

I also recommend 101 self working card tricks.  It was my first book and I still remember one or two routines from it.  The 5-book series Card College is a must have.  Start w/ the first edition.  It's a comprehensive course in sleight of hand card magic.  it teaches techniques and routines both.  the Only thing is that the routines for each chapter use only the techniqes used in that chapter or those previous so for a while you're pretty restricted, but I would still highly, highly, highly recommend it.

It also really helps if you were to find a magician friend because its much easier to learn with another person live. The books you will be receiving are an exellent starting resource as well though. I hope you practice alot and show us your progress. We can always help you out on whatever your stuck on.

I've learned the 2 card monte between my last post and now, showed this one girl at work and she totally flipped out. (I did the way the tricks done and sort of talked to her the way brad christian does) a friend from work gave me a paper he had on it from a long time ago, he no longer has interest in card tricks so he gave me that and he's got a book somewhere if he finds it I'll get that too, yay...

So far learned a 1 hand fan, but a little pressed for time right now, rents due, trying to get some extra hours in and all that :) Thanks for the advice guys.
