Hi everyone,

This is my first post to this forum, so I apologize from the get go if I'm violating a rule of etiquette. I am interested in card magic and I know a few slights and some descent routines, but I am looking for a particular effect. David Copperfield performed this one on one of his television episodes and the effect I'm looking for was actually just a lead in effect to the main trick.

Anyhow, the effect I'm looking for goes like this: the magician has a deck of cards that he manipulates, fans, and shuffles while describing the NEXT trick he is about to perform. He says, "but there is one important thing we have to do before we begin," as he covers the deck with his hand, "and that is to take the cards out of the card box," When he removes his top hand the audience sees the cards are in the box. The magician opens the box, removes the cards, and begins the next trick....

Anyone know what this trick is called, if it is sold anywhere or the method described in literature anywhere? Copperfield treated it like a throw-away, and went on to make a selected card appear on the other side of a window. I've always thought the lead in was better than the main trick.

Hello Fish and welcome to the forums. Is it this effect? http://www.metacafe.com/watch/467889/david_copperfield_card_through_window/

As far as I know, DC doesn't publish his material so you wouldn't be able to buy this anywhere if it was his own. The method looks far too obvious though, there seems to be too many opportunities to get caught out if you were to actually perform this live.

Hello,

There is an effect such as you describe, or as close as I'm aware, in the book
5X5 Japan.

This book was re-published by Richard Kaufman and can be purchased from his website or any other magic store I'm sure.

Although the effect described in 5X5 Japan is different from that performed by Copperfield, it is effective enough.

I can direct you to a similar effect called Freedom Pack, by Justin Miller. He performs a trick with the deck, and then he gives it a gentle toss/flip, and its suddenly in the box. It does require a gimmick, that I believe is included, and on the DVD he teaches you step by step how to make a new one if it were to break or something.
I strongly recommend it.
