depends on what kind of stage magic i suppose. Are you going to be doing big illusions like floating woman, sawing in half ect..ect...ect.. or are you going to do stage magic like working with smaller props????

Jim Gerrish is writing a book of easy stage magic you can make yourself from Hardboard and Duct Tape. You can make props like the Hippity Hop Whatevers or a Production Box and so on for less than $10 if you know how to use a sabre saw and a drill. This allows beginners to get a quick and easy start. Then, later on, when you are making the BIG BUCKS by giving shows, you can turn in your home-made props for some expensive Magic Store props.

Also check out the props I make from stuff you can find in almost any Dollar Store (or Quid Store in the UK). Iy's all on my site: http://www.magicnook.com

I agree, ropes are partly how I got into magic, I saw a magician do an amazing rope routine...and here I am!!
