I always have had a hard time blowing up a modelling balloon. So I use a pump. However, I always find it more impressive and 'adding to the performance' when I see a balloonist blow a balloon in one breath with his mouth.

I wonder if there is a special technique to this, or if it's just about the strength of your lungs.

First you have to put the balloon in your mouth then take a really big breath and BLOW!!!!!!!! if that doesn't work go back to your pump.:)

Just joking..... The first thing you have to do is train your lungs I know that sounds funny but you do. How do you do that you ask

Take a balloon use your pump to blow it up let the air out then blow the balloon up again and again Do that for the first couple of days then start doing that again but with out blowing the ballon up first with the pump. In about two weeks of doing that every day you should be able to blow up a balloon in one breath.

Also when blowing up a balloon you need to blow from your lungs not your cheeks you will know if you use your cheeks because they will hurt like hell afterwards.

Also before blowing up a balloon strech it out that will loosen it up a little for you. When doing that you can make allot of jokes about what your doing with the kids tell them that its time for your excercises then start streching the balloon.

Anyways like anything else in the world it just take practice but be careful please if you feel light headed stop and recollect your bearings I don't want to hear you went to the hospital for passing out.

Two weeks of practice and you to can blow up balloons with one breath.:)

I hope this helps

Indeed there is a special technique, and if done incorrectly can be bad for you. It's initiating the process that is the hardest.

In my first sculpture balloon workshop, I once discovered the wrong method. I literally saw twinkly stars and I did feel light headed.

Since I have a 3 year old son, it was easy for me to learn the technique.  I have to blow him balloons at home or here at vacation a new plastic boat, a plastic band and a plastic ball all the time, so all credit goes to him hehe.

A funny comedian of old (Bob Nelson) once said about balloon blowing(while stretching the balloon), "This helps to get the balloon ready and gets me excited.  Oh, I'm sorry I shouldn't have said that--it really doesn't get the balloon ready."

He also made the Billy Bob teeth famous.

a friend of mine who does the "triple threat" of clowning, magic, and balloon art carries a small handy air compressor he keeps in a fanny pack and runs a hose to the nozzle...he has the nozzle attached to one of those self-winding keychain keeper thingy's (sorry for the oh-so-technical description ;))...that way he doesn't have to worry about blowing them up over and over again (though I'm sure it would be good to be able to just in case his pump fails), and over the years he's blended it in with his presentation that it's almost like an extension of his body (just like any good prop/tool should be)...

Spadesy writes, in part ". . .if done incorrectly can be bad for you."

Actually, you are using the same muscles and body parts that any horn player uses and it won't do you any harm; I've checked on this with SEVERAL doctors, all of whom say there is no problem.

So relax, anyone who was worried.

BTW, cosmicplay is right: While there is nothing wrong with using a pump, it looks much more impressive blowing them up by mouth.

Indeed it can be bad for you. If, when doing it the baloon doesn't accept the air it mimics what is known as the valsava maneuver http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valsalva_maneuver. There is some evidence that a valsalva type maneuver could cause a brain aneurysm (obviously that person would need to be in a high risk group). However, this is thought to be quite unlikely for the majority of the populations. A more real danger is the blood pressure spike for those with heart disease or high blood pressure http://rehabworks.ksc.nasa.gov/education/topics/valsalva.php. The best advice would be not to continue blowing if the bolloon is not enlarging.

My friends and i use to blow up water bomb balloons. Theres no point using lung power and there is a method. I discovered that instead of blowing in the balloon, u use your Cheek muscles to squeeze in air. Not just your lungs. Once you get it started the balloon is easy to blow up. Anyone who plays a Digeridoo will know what i mean. If that doesnt work u can turn the balloon around and suck on the end, putting a bit of air in the balloon getting it started, then after that it's easy.
