This is the Roy Benson Bowl routine.
There are also techniques by Frank Garcia, John Cornelius, and even a little something that will probably have the great Slydini spinning in his grave.

Technically nice. Presentation a bit lame. All in all nice.

I don't really like how you said it, but you're right. What a routine like this lacks is a 'Hook', something to make it interesting beyond the deception. I'm currently in the process of writing a script for this routine which, I believe, could give the trick a little boost and make it more fun to watch.

Thanks for your time and your comment!

Cool routine!! neat character. Makes me want to work out something similar with maybe a small bowl or coffee cup to do impromptu at a dinner table.

Very cool. I would speed it up some. But the whole thing was very good. Have a good one. Don

Hey, big thanks Don, speeding it up seems to be the word of order here. Thanks for your time!

The routine seems artificially streched. Longer than aimed for. The slieght were nice. And magicians have to love the Slydini thing in between. But it made me think about my Bowl routine. I will start working on it. Yeah, you motivate me. Don't let it turn into a habit.

Thanks Roland, quite an honor to have motivated you, I'll try not to let it happen again. I must say. I wonder if the routine will feel as stretched when I have worked out the pacing. Thanks for your help and your advice.

Ok, great routine overall, nice progression, lots of magic. It's obvious that there's a ton of thought put into this, right down to the smaller subtleties and the feints-that-aren't-feints.

The FT's... I'm only going to point this out because I've seen you handle spongeballs live and there appears to be some differences. The camera's not picking up the retention, so that's a bit of a pity because your timing close-up is really good (as you've heard me say). The problem is that at the point of the FT (and I think one or two other sleights) you're drawing our attention to the hands. Often you're either looking at the hands during the FT, or the FT is happening when the hands are rising. That moment has to be as forgettable as possible. Do you have the Carney on Ramsay DVD? If you don't, let me know and I'll lend it to you, because in my opinion his thoughts on vanishes are directly applicable here. You've got the wand there, I'd use that as the primary motivation for each and every vanish that you can possibly use it for. That's where the heat has to be, instead of on the moment of the FT. (I also think the right hand could come back a little bit looser from the point of the FT.)

The bowl handling -- other than the initial L**d where you glanced right down at it at the time -- is overall really nice. From my vantage point you're using the subtleties correctly and it should really mess with people's heads. Wasn't prepared for the climax at all. Really good.

The opening sequence was pretty good... in my opinion I'd do the flash first and then produce two balls immediately. The spellbound change is a good idea at the beginning as well, and you get into it and get out of it well.

Really like this routine. I'm curious... is all of it Benson's? Because it's obvious you've thrown a lot of yourself in there presentationally, and I was wondering what else you might have added. It's hard to argue with 5 minutes of good magic.

Thank you Erlandish, very helpful comments as always.

To answer your question, I believe Roy Benson is the first to publish a routine with spongeballs appearing under a bowl. The Stemmed bowl may or may not have been Benson, I am not sure, but it adds considerably to the routine. As for the moves and sequences, the purse frame I believe is a David Roth isn't it? The move just before the second ball is from Johnny Paul and the last ball is a Richard Sanders move. The vanish I used is something fairly close to what Frank Balzerak describes.
Oh the subtlety to display the bowl is a John Cornelius idea that I saw Frank Garcia using.
And of course I did use a bit of Slydini there on the first vanish of the second phase.
Basically, here are what I think my "contributions" to the routine are. A. My ever so charming person B. Adding a second phase, thereby not only creating more magic, but also time misdirection on the load. C. That 3 second joke about the ball being the wrong colour (plus I guess mixing the purse frame with the bowl... but y'know). And 4. the overall structure, which I have to say I'm pretty happy with.

I enjoyed it, Aramis! Especially the Slydini impression.
A few points;
- I think a faster pace would be good to the routine. It would make it more 'energetic', vivid, and I think that would fit well with the fun and humorous aspects of the routine.
- Somehow I would introduce the bowl after producing the 3 balls. Not sure why. It may just add clarity to separate the sections. You want to spoon feed the audience, as Tommy Wonder explains, give information step by step. You made a nice separation between phase 2 and 3, telling them you will now try it without ever lifting the bowl.
- I think your use of your eyes need work. You don't seem consistent with it. Especially in false transfers, use of the eyes can make a big difference. Briefly look at the magic wand when you are grabbing it, then move your eyes back to the hand, and in between give a glance to the audience. As Tyler Erickson says, you want to look at the magic, not at the moves. While you are doing that at some points, in the climax for instance, you are looking at the audience upon revelation of the big ball. I think it would make more sense to look at the ball at this moment, so that all the focus is there. But I must admit I am not an expert in this at all. Does anyone else have thoughts on this?
